Setting Your Novel There’s Gold in Your Own Backyard

Monday, December 31st, 2007

I started my first manuscript during my junior year at Virginia Tech. I had a couple of characters in mind, a flimsy skeleton of a plot, and one pressing question. Where to set the book?

At that point in my life, I hadn’t traveled too far past the Virginia state line. And to me, the rest of the world sounded alluring in a way the town I grew up in couldn’t compare.

So I considered my options. My story could take place on an island. An obviously appealing setting. Palm trees, sinking pink sunsets, water as blue as a robin’s egg. And of course, glistening white sand.

Or what about Italy? A place I had always dreamed of going. Olive groves, the chiming of beautiful old church bells, faded stucco buildings.

I set my first few manuscripts in exactly that kind of locale. The only trouble was, I had never been to any of those places. And once I got past the generic descriptions, I found myself facing what felt like an empty reservoir from which to draw my story.

I had read the advice in practically every creative writing handbook. Write what you know. And I began to understand that they weren’t just talking about plot and characters, but the place where the story unfolds as well.

What I knew was southwest Virginia. But what could the rest of the world possibly find interesting about it?
Despite my skepticism, I finally started a manuscript set in a small Virginia town much like my hometown. This was the first of my books to sell. No coincidence, I’m sure.
How did I finally come to see what was around me and what others might find appealing about it? By looking at where I’ve lived and what it has meant to me.

The physical beauty of Virginia is indisputable. Spring arrives with its paintbrush of green. Summer fills the orchards with apples and peaches, thickens fields with grass for hay. Fall dips maples and oaks in red and gold. Winter lays ice across our lakes and hides our roads under snow.

Those are the broadbrush strokes of my story, but I believe the details that bring a setting to life come from the individual places that populate a small community.
From the Main Street of my childhood, there was Ben Franklin and the Melody Shop. Kittinger’s Drug Store, Brammer’s Five and Ten and N. Morris Department Store.
Ben Franklin was a favorite. After digging out coins for the parking meter, we would head downstairs to the toy department. The snack bar was also on the bottom floor, and I can remember the delicious smell of steamed hot dog buns and french fries wafting up in greeting.

The Melody Shop was the place to buy 45 rpm records - yes, I know, I’m dating myself! Kittinger’s for a cherry Coke. And at Brammer’s Five and Ten, my sister and I stocked up on five-cent candy which we resold at elevated prices to our cousins in the pretend store we set up in my grandma’s basement.

Country stores show up in my stories on a regular basis, and I’m sure their origin is the one owned by my great aunt and uncle. My sister and I spent many Saturday nights there with our grandparents. All the adults sat on stools in the middle of the store and talked, while we drank Sun-drop and ate Wise potato chips from bright blue bags.

Much of my love for the place where I grew up comes from my grandpa. He loved just getting out and looking at it. Bright and early on Sunday mornings, my sister and I would climb in his old blue and white Chevrolet truck and drive over to the local Quickette for the morning paper. We always took a detour of some sort, to check on cows, look at hay, see a pony he was thinking about buying for us. These were adventures, and we learned the county roads like our own backyard.

Pieces of these places have shown up in each of my books. I loved them, and I think that rings true with readers. I’ve traveled a bit since those first manuscripts, and although I may venture out in future books to other settings, it will be with a healthy respect for the gold in my own backyard.

How To Create Gold With Email Promotions - Part 2

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Don’t forget people are so busy now they will only give your email a limited amount of their concentration. Therefore you should summarize your offer in the first paragraph.

If it’s compelling enough it should grab the readers attention and make them want to read further.

Put your reader in the picture!

How do you do this?

Explain how your product will help them to solve a problem.

Don’t focus too much on how it’s helped you, they don’t care about you.

Use sentences like…

Imagine yourself spending less time doing the boring paperwork, and see yourself outside playing with the family in the park.

By using ……. you can make more money, while working less hours. Don’t continue to do things the old fashioned way, try ……. and you could be down the beach while most other……….are still figuring out what you’ve done.

There are hundreds of ways you can include the prospect in the picture, just get creative and always focus on what they want, not what you want.

Use ownership words that allow the reader to feel comfortable when reading the copy.

For Example don’t say “When you buy this…” instead say “When you own a…”

See how this takes the fear out of reading this?

People don’t want to be sold anything! They do however want to buy or own things!

You can also say things like…”When you use the ….. it will help you to….” Instead of saying “By purchasing the…..it will help you to.

See the subtle differences?

Write things in a way that automatically imply that the reader already owns the product
and you are merely pointing out what they have already experienced.

What makes your product or service different?

Make a list of why your product or service is better than the competitions. This will help you to identify what is actually different and from there you can put the best one into a USP.

You’re Unique Selling Proposition.

It’s the thing that sets you apart and makes people want to have what you are offering.

Try to think of a great USP for your business!

Cold Calling - The Ghastliest Chore in All of Marketing

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

Experts say that in order to be a successful network marketer you must make at a minimum of 150 cold calls per day. That will take approximately 8-10 hours per day if you don’t take a lunch or potty break. Network marketers, who work full-time in addition to running a home business, don’t have the time required to make the phone calls necessary be successful in their home business. That is why 95% of network marketers fail.

Almost all sales professionals freeze up at the very idea of making cold calls. If you’re one of them, if you flat out, big time, despise making cold calls, if prospecting makes you want to hurl well, stay with me here because you’re going to feel a whole lot better in just a moment.

What is cold calling, and why does it scare the living daylights out of plenty of capable adults? Well let’s look at a dictionary style definition of the term: Cold calling is a telephone call or personal visit soliciting a person or business without prior contact.

Cold calling is a form of personal, not mass marketing. It requires a one-to-one physical presence or telepresence. But precisely because cold calling is personal selling you risk getting the cold shoulder each time you get up the nerve to prospect. That can make you feel vulnerable and tense, which explains why you’ll do almost anything to avoid it.

Prospecting is uncomfortable. Let’s face it we’re all inundated by telemarketers who cold call on everything. We hate being on the receiving end, and we don’t want to do it.
It’s dread that thwarts cold calling-a fear of not being perfect, of being yelled at, or of making a fool of yourself. Some barriers are psychological, and there are people whose emotional makeup simply doesn’t lend itself to the special stresses and strains of selling.

At this point, if you’ve worked yourself into a cold sweat about cold calling, relax. I know your pain. There is light at the end of the tunnel. You can have a successful home business or be a successful network marketer without having to cold call.

Savvy network marketers are now automating their businesses with sophisticated marketing tools that make their cold calls for them. They no longer have to spend hours on end with the telephone stuck to their ear manually dialing hundreds of telephone numbers trying to reach one potential customer. Their automated system does all of the dirty work for them and even databases their prospects information for future reference. Those network marketers who are taking advantage of these simple to use hi-tech tools are now reaping big financial rewards and spending hours on the phone talking to prospects that’ve called them and want to know more about what they have to offer.

Rita James is a successful entrepreneur and internet marketer. If you want to learn more about these simple to use hi-tech tools that eliminate the pain and need of cold calling please visit her website http://www.RitaJames.net.

The Concept of Gift Baskets

Friday, December 28th, 2007

One of the popular forms of giving gifts is the gift basket. What makes a gift basket so popular and attractive as a form of gift? The main attraction of a gift basket lies in the number of goodies that can be gifted at once, and the attractive colors and packaging that goes with them. Thus, instead of giving one large gift, the recipient can be given a range of smaller gifts grouped in related themes like gourmet, fruits, and chocolates.

Gift baskets have many other positive aspects. They can be customized to suit any occasion - whether it is Christmas, Easter, or social occasions like marriages, birthdays, and anniversaries. They can also be customized to suite the receiver’s likes and tastes. A sports lover, a literature loving girl, or a gourmet lover, a gift basket can be tailored to meet their likes.

Another feature that makes gift baskets popular is their ability to fit in any occasion. If you are not sure what to gift, thing of a gift basket. With its attractive packaging and the range of goodies it can hold, a gift basket never fails to cheer up a receiver.

In fact, if you are not too sure of wrapping your goodies in a basket, a gift basket need not actually come in a wicker basket. Any attractive container can be made to serve as the basket, wrapped with suitable covers and colors. These containers can even be used afterwards for storage requirements.

If you plan to order gift baskets, there are three main types -
Ready-made Gift Baskets - The easiest to choose from and buy, you can shop for them at online stores and local shops. Select them by occasion or variety of contents.

Customized Gift Baskets - If you wish to hand select the goodies in the basket, some stores allow you to do precisely that. Tell them what all you would to have gift wrapped, and the basket would be ready for delivery in no time.
Homemade Gift Baskets - For the near and dear ones, there is nothing more valuable than a gift hand made by you especially for them. This may require some training or experience, or a little help from others. When the gift is hand made, professional looks may not count as much as your care and effort that went into making the gift.

Creating a Holiday Look - Gold or Silver with a Kiss of Red

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

Is there a special occasion or a formal get-together in your near-future? Consider some silver or gold sparkle with a “kiss” of red.

For your event, cleanse and moisturize your face thoroughly. Wait a moment for the moisturizer to be absorbed and then remove any excess. *Tip* Coverage (foundation, etc.) goes on more evenly over well-hydrated than dry skin. If necessary, use concealer on dark circles and blemishes. *Trick* Squeeze concealer in the palm of your hand to warm it and then mix it with foundation for more consistent color. Apply foundation either on specific areas to even out skin tone or all over your face. (Blend any foundation carefully with the surrounding skin so there are no noticeable lines.) *Trick* “Set” the foundation with loose powder for longer lasting wear. *Trick* Getting fine lines? Try a face primer; it fills in fine lines and, followed with foundation, makes skin appear smoother.

For fun, decide whether to enhance your eyes or lips. You want to draw attention to one set of features but not both at the same time.

If you want the focus to be on your eyes, you can dramatize them with one, two or three colors. Opting for a single color? Choose a silver or gold, whichever blends with your skin tone and complements your outfit. *Tip* Silvers and grays are cool colors while golds are usually warm and less aging. *Trick* Use an eye color cream or an eye primer with eye color for longer wear (a real plus when you’re out). You can mix both a cream or powder eye color with the eye primer. Apply your choice of silver or gold from eye lashes to brows.

Prefer more than one color? Select one as a mid-tone (over the eyelids). Add either silver or gold as an accent (lashes to creases of eyes). Highlight (under the brow bones) with whichever you haven’t used as an accent. *Trick mix the mid-tone color with either silver or gold for an extra “pop.” *Tip* Sparkle emphasizes fine lines so, if it’s a concern, just add sparkly color under the brow bones.

Define your eyes with eye liner only if it makes them appear larger. If your eye shadow is predominantly golden, consider a gold or brown liner. If your eye shadow is mainly silver, try a gray or black liner. *Trick* Lining the lower lids seems to draw the eyes down. If signs of aging are a concern, concentrate on the upper lids.

Curl your eye lashes. *Tip* Curling the lashes gives the impression of more open (wider) eyes. Follow with a mascara that meets your needs for lengthening or widening lashes. *Tip* Brown tends to be softer and less aging while black is more dramatic.

Don’t forget your eyebrows; they help frame your face. Darken your eyebrows with either a matching brow liner or, for a softer touch, a brow powder or powder eye shadow. *Tip* You can also brush your eye brows and set them with a clear gel.

Put on cheek color to emphasize your cheek bones. *Tip* Either pat the color on the high points of your cheek bones or start roughly two fingers away from your nose and sweep the color up to your temples.

If you want the focus to be on your lips, tone down the eye makeup and consider a red lip shade. There’s a red for everyone. Let your skin tone determine which reds are most becoming: those with cool undertones berries) or warm undertones (corals). Then choose muted or bright, matte or shimmer depending upon the look you want to achieve. Lip liner and lip gloss are optional.

For softer lips to complement dramatic eyes, try a subdued red. Then razzle dazzle! You’ve created a special holiday look.

Blizzard and World of Warcraft Gold Sellers

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Many World of Warcraft players today likes to buy WoW gold, items, accounts and power leveling sessions, but blizzard along with other players consider this an act of cheating. Well, you have the ability to enhance your character to a much higher level or better quality items, weapons, armors and other equipment with real money. It’s unfair for those players who does not have the extra cash to spare or would prefer to play it the old fashion way. But for example, we all know what Nintendo is right? Well when game shark came out did Nintendo try to stop or prevent them from selling? No, they didn’t. But of course, for those who chose to cheat the game was not required to play with others that didn’t want to cheat. So that is one conclusion as to why players and Blizzard does not approve of selling or buying gold.

Disruption from Warcraft gold farmers. Yes I’m sure we’ve all experienced that farming now a days have been a little difficult due to the overwhelming population of WoW gold farmers. If gold wasn’t able to be sold using real money the farmers wouldn’t exist and players would probably be able to enjoy the game more. Perhaps blizzard should enforce a law to farming? Or allow players to tag a mob and allow them preparation time to kill the mob they were targeting? Well, Blizzard is not a government and even if so, the government today isn’t perfect either.

Another reason why I can understand players hate the idea of buying/selling gold is because it disrupts the economy. If there is excess gold, then the value of gold drops and the value of the item will rise causing players to spend more gold on the item than what they would normally need to pay. Basic economics 101, inflation and deflation. A player can only farm an X amount of gold over a given period of time. The more gold there is, the more the item will cost, the more a player will have to farm unless they purchase the gold of course.

Well with all these problems involving selling gold, why hasn’t Blizzard done something? I believe they probably are working on a solution but believe it not, farmers do make up about 30% of their population. Somewhere in the back of their mind I’m sure they don’t want to get rid of all subscribers. What they do instead is ban a few at a time and they would be required to buy a new world of warcraft cd key. Extra cash flow for the mighty O Blizzard. Yes farmers and sellers do get their accounts banned. But have not heard of any buyers getting banned however. Lucky for us?

As some of you may know, another popular mmorpg publisher is Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) with their many leading titles including the first MMORPG hit EverQuest, Star Wars Galaxies, and EverQuest 2. Why am I bringing up SOE? Because they have introduced the Sony Exchange. The Sony Exchange is a secure market place for players to auction their currencies and items to other players for real cash. In return SOE of course takes in a small fee for themselves. Charming isn’t it? Well along with this new innovative idea, they also of plans of releasing a new game where they will be selling currencies and items themselves. That pretty much just beats the second paragraph of not cheating. But of course I’m sure they will create specific servers where the purchasing/selling of virtual assets will not be allowed.

If SOE is getting into the secondary market why can’t the players? I do wonder if Blizzard should decide to get into the secondary market themselves. Believe it or not, but World of Warcraft subscriber base more than quadruples what SOE has in total. As you can see SOE is accepting the new trend and making a huge load of profit, I’m sure Blizzard would follow up on the idea as well. EverQuest was the first mmorpg hit ever, Blizzard known for their real time strategy games now has the most popular mmorpg as well. I wouldn’t see why they won’t follow and collect some of the cash themselves. Overall, although we do not know of Blizzards intentions for those who buys WoW gold, I can say for sure that I do not know a single person who has gotten their accounts banned for buying WoW gold. Please understand that this article is only a matter of opinion and I hold no responsiblity to your actions.

Baby Shower Gift Basket Ideas

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

Need a great gift idea? Maybe you’ve already decided and now it’s time to fill it up. If you’re in need of an idea I highly recommend a gift basket because they are complete customizable. They are a great idea for any baby shower because they can fit your personality or the party’s theme. By creating a gift basket, you can put together many small necessities for the mother-to-be and present them in a very attractive way.

There are many different things that you can fill a gift basket with. I have found that the best way to create a basket is to first pick a theme or follow the parties theme.

For a baby shower you can pick many different themes. You can pick a feeding time theme and fill your basket with bottles, bibs, baby plates, forks, and spoons, and maybe a recipe book for homemade baby food. You could also add some baby formula mix.

Another theme, and one of my favorites, is a bath time theme. You can fill your basket with baby shampoo and conditioner, baby body wash, bath bubbles, and baby powder. There are also many adorable bath towel sets that you could add. Top it off with some bath time toys and you have a great gift.

You can also do a bed time theme. Fill your basket with soft blankets and stuffed animals. Make sure to include some cozy pajamas and slippers and finish it off with a book of bedtime stories and a lullaby C.D. This will prove very rewarding when mama gets her little one to sleep and she can get some rest!

One last idea is to do a care basket for the new mom. Add some stress release candles, a book about motherhood, some chocolate, and some indulgent body cr

Details Of The Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card

Monday, December 24th, 2007

Business owners should consider the Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card for a number of reasons. Those that are looking for a credit card that offers a good reward program for free and discount travel should consider this line of credit. It is offered to individuals that have good or better credit and that are interested in flying through Delta Airlines. If that is you, this credit card may be the right solution.

The details of the Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Card are good. It offers an introductory period of 9.99% on balance transfers that you fund within the first six months of owning the line of credit. That rate will hold until the transfers are paid off in full. In interest rates, the credit card offers an APR of 17.99% on purchases at a variable rate. For cash advances, you will get 22.99% APR variable.

A drawback here is the $85 annual fee which is waived your first year. In addition, the fee can be reduced if you have other business accounts held by American Express in the business category. You have a grace period of 20 days and a credit limit that can extend as much as $50,000.

The rewards program is good on the Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card. You will earn one mile per dollar. In addition, you earn two mils per dollar when you use the line of credit at locations such as the supermarket, on Delta Airlines or Song purchases, at the US Postal Service and various other programs. You will need to use them within three years and they are compatible with your Frequent Flyer Miles. The most that you can earn in one year is $100,000.

The Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card offers a good amount of benefit in their reward program. In addition, the interest rates are decent, although not the lowest. Yet, for those that have average credit and are looking for travel rewards, this American Express funded credit card is the way to go.

A Baby Gift Basket Can be a Perfect Present

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

When a close friend or relative is having a baby, there are always presents and baby shower gifts to think about getting. The new mother is going to have an intense period of adjustment before she gets settled into the routine of having another human being to look after, so she will need all the help possible from family and friends to make that transition as easy and memorable as possible. This should be a celebratory time for the new family, not a time of worry or stress, and a gift basket to commemorate the new addition can be just the thing to brighten their spirits even more, and maybe even supply them with some things that will end up coming in handy.

A baby gift basket can be one of the easiest way for you as the gift giver to be creative, and show the person your giving it to just how much you care about them. Instead of one big gift, you get to give out a plethora of trinkets, toys, and other fun items, wrapped together in a beautiful package which, in itself, can be a gorgeous thing to receive. A popular thing to do when buying a gift basket is to let the company who makes it fashion the wicker basket as a bassinet, within which are all the things you want to bestow upon the new child, making your gift all the more thoughtful and appropriate. Better yet, there are so many companies out there that are experts at making these sorts of things, so even if you’re not exactly Martha Stewart yourself, you can let an anonymous craftsperson make it seem like you should have your own cable show.

Within the gift basket, you’ll want to include the basics, those simple bare necessities. This means, teddy bears and or dolls are a given, as any parent will know a young child can never have enough teddy bears. If you want to be gender specific, you can go for the standard pink or blue color palettes to appease notions of femininity and masculinity, but many people nowadays are shying away from such black and white notions of sex, so your best bet is probably to stay as neutral as possible. This also means that you can go nuts and include just about anything in the toy department that you want to give the new baby. No longer do Tonka trucks mean ‘it’s a boy’ nor do Raggedy Ann dolls indicate the infant is a girl, so take advantage of this freedom in creating a truly unique and baby gift basket. Baby oil or baby wipes can be the new parent’s dream as well, since they’ll surely be running through plenty of both, so don’t be afraid to include the practical as well as the sentimental.

In addition to the variety of contents you can include in your basket, you also have the luxury of having a wide range of prices and sizes to choose from, as crafting gift baskets for babies is a burgeoning market right now. Obviously, if the expecting mother is only a co-worker or a casual acquaintance, you don’t want to present them with an elaborately fashioned and ornately packaged baby gift basket, as you’d probably be shelling out more money than you really want to spend. A nice, small gift basket can say everything you want to say, and do it in a classy, memorable way, without costing you the proverbial arm and leg.

Christopher M. Luck has an extensive background of over 18 years experience dealing with baby gift baskets and is now offering his free professional baby gift basket advice to the public. If you are at all interested in Christopher’s baby gift basket advice, tips, or secrets, you can visit his baby gift basket blog

Create A Gift Basket For A Cat Lover!

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

The choice of what gift to give your family and friends can often be a difficult one. One of the best gifts that you can give is a themed gift basket. A gift basket is that one present that comes in many shapes, themes and of course price ranges. A gift basket can also be a new arrival gift idea for that family pet.

The diversity of gift baskets is never-ending. You can give a cat gourmet food gift basket (make sure they are good quality products to ensure the feline doesn’t reject the food!) or a bath and grooming necessities gift basket. In fact the list is endless.

Here is a simple basket that you can easily create yourself for that special “Cat Lover”.

Pick a basket style. I like to use either a bucket (can be used to store grooming products in) or a cat basket. There are a lot of choices on the market so choose between one with two side handles or without handles. A cat likes to feel snug in their environment so a closed in fabric padded style basket will also be well received. Make certain the basket is large enough to hold the gifts you have selected and of course if it is intended for the cat to sleep in it, large enough to accommodate that special Feline.

Choose a color that complements the cat lover’s home decor. If in doubt, choose a neutral color by selecting a natural wicker basket.

Next select a variety of items that have a cat theme. When selecting the gifts for the cat lover choose items with cat themes such as cat calendars, coffee mugs, computer mouse pads, T-shirts, note cards, stationery, cat magazines, include fiction and nonfiction books and picture frames.

Select some grooming brushes and cat toys for their cat.

If you are on a budget try a small basket and include:

A photo frame, a disposable camera to take some memorable moments between the recipient and their special feline, a photo album, along with a voucher for photo finishing.

When you are finished choosing the gifts and have selected the basket, wrap the completed Gift Basket with cellophane paper and a nice ribbon to give it a finishing touch. Use shredded paper inside the basket to hold the goodies in place. Tie a humorous gift tag with a message for that added touch.
